Wednesday, Feb. 18, 1931

Today lent begins.  Papa went to church this morning.  Rosalia is up again today.  Osie Neff moved today in Lutz’s house here in Hecker.  Bertille went to church this evening for lent services.  It is raining again tonight.  We put out cabbage plants out in a bunch today.  It is too wet to set them out yet.


Saturday, Dec. 6, 1930

Papa got some crushing done this morning.  This afternoon Mrs. Lutz property is getting sold.   Papa went to the sale.  Mr. Hill was auctioneer.  Rosalia & Bertille went to church this afternoon & then we also went down to the sale, Papa bought some fruit jars and pie cake pans .50¢ it was a pretty cheap sale.  Papa bought a wash stand for Oscar Birkner for $3.00.  We brought it home on our Whippet truck.  Aunt Mary came up with Oscar Birkner’s wife in the buggy.  There sure were a lot of people got crushing done today.  They finished this evening about 8 o’clock.


Monday, Oct. 27, 1930

Leona came up this morning after the kids.  It rained a little this morning.  This afternoon Mrs. Lutz is getting buried.  Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary was here this afternoon & then Rosalia & Bertille went along with them to Mrs. Lutz funeral.  The people couldn’t all get in church it was so large a funeral we got as far as the steeple.  We rode along out to the cemetery with Uncle Fred & rode back with Joe Gregson’s.  There was a man around this morning selling coffee, and with so many checks you could win something either a clock or dishes, waterless cooker, so we ordered 2 lbs. coffee and dishes.  Eggs today are .28¢.  Rosalia was up town this morning and got some feed.  Mrs. Rausch is awful sick at present.


Friday, Oct. 24, 1930

Bertille was at church this morning.  The Catholic School children didn’t have no school all this week, because the furnace isn’t fixed yet.  They took Mrs. Lutz to the hospital this morning, she is in a pretty bad condition, she is swollen up so bad she can’t hardly breathe they say.  Mr. Zimmer the candidate for School Superintendent was here this morning.  The Monroe Co. farmers Institue is going to be held at Columbia this year.  This evening the bell of the Evangelical church tolled 58 strokes for the death of Mrs. Lutz, she died at 3:30 this afternoon.  They was to operate on her, but she was too weak, when they brought her to the hospital.


Thursday, Oct. 23, 1930

Today it is a year that we moved up in our new house, but we didn’t have such weather then, like it is today.  Bertille was at church this morning.  There were some people here this afternoon & wanted to buy some eggs, but they wanted all white ones & that we didn’t have, so from here they went down to Braun’s.  We were invited to a dance out at Ettling’s tonight, it is a birthday party, but we didn’t go.  Eggs are .27¢ today.  Mrs. Anna Lutz is awful sick at present, she has a nervous break down.  Papers were given out this evening for Gambach’s Sale.  Starts Saturday.  Merchandise, shoes, hardward, clothing, this is closing out sale.
