Tuesday, Jan. 20, 1931

We washed today.  Anna Braun was here this morning.  This afternoon Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary were here.  Papa & Uncle Fred went down to see Anna Braun, & then afterwords went to Waterloo.  Uncle Fred bought Anna Braun’s house & buildings in Hecker today for $3,000.00.  A note as part pay.  Uncle Fred & Papa went over to see Elmer Kammler about the rent.  It is $10.00 every month.  Papa went down to see Jos. R. Braun this evening.  And ordered his license.  Jos. Watchel & Mr. Laut are each butchering 1 hog today.  Henry told us this morning that Rose Crook “nee” McDermott was buried this morning, she was in St. Clements Hospital in Red Bud, & was pretty bad sick, she had heart trouble.  They were just married about a year.  Ben Schilling bought Phillip Braun’s property, & Henry Braun sold 2 lots where his buildings are on to Clara Braun.  Everybody’s selling & buying now.  This evening Mr. & Mrs. Steve Rennecker was here, we played 4 handed pinochle.  Steve and Bertille were partners & lost 5 games out of 6.


Saturday, Dec. 20, 1930

Papa was up town this morning, & this afternoon made a business trip out to George Sensel’s & then down to Red Bud.  The St. Louis Diary quit giving the people skim milk now.  We traded our old red Christmas tree today for a green one.  There are 3 schools going together & give a play at the Bob White Grange on Christmas Eve, one school being the Fairview School which Reuben Kammler teaches.  O.J. Maul is giving a Grand Opening Dance at Breezy Hill tonight.  Elmer Kammler’s boy Billy has the chicken pox & also Perry Laut.  There is to be a Euchre and Box Social in Tiptown on Dec. 28 Sun. night.


Friday, Dec. 19, 1930

Mr. Caldwell from Burksville was here this morning for a short while.  This afternoon we all went out to Henry’s to saw wood.  Robert Laut, John Henkel, Emil were all helping.  Mr. & Mrs. Walter Kelley are rejoicing over a new born baby girl last week.  Leo McCarthy captured a fox last week & Greg McCarthy had a spelling contest in school last Sat.  Robert Heyl was winner, he won 99 words out of 100, he missed the word alien.  Mrs. Seibert of Smithton died and will be buried Sun. afternoon at Smithton.  We put our Christmas bells on the window this evening.  Hy. Armstutz store clerk at Gambach’s retired & is going out butchering now for the people & Ralph Rausch has filled the vacancy.


Friday, Sept. 26, 1930

Henry & Leona came up this morning, they brought Bobby & Floyd here, & then they went up to Belleville.  They all had dinner with us.  Papa went down & cut the cemetery grass this afternoon & then he got a load of wood.  Philip Braun is starting to put Elmer Kammler’s roof on today, Robert Laut & Ed Neff are helping him.  Today is Charles Schilling’s birhtday he is going to be 17 or 18, I don’t know which.


Sunday, Sept. 14, 1930

We all went to first mass this morning at 8 o’clock Leona and her two girl friends, Miss Ida Whitkamp, & Miss Lena Koopman.  Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary stayed for lunch.  Second mass is from now until 10:15.  Henry came up for that.  He helped to move the piano from church over to the new school hall.  Next Sun. night will be the first moving picture shown in the hall.  Steve Rennecker was over a little while this evening.  It rain this afternoon from about 3 until 5:30, showers, it sure was nice & we need it too.  Robert Laut couldn’t get his machine started so Perry Klotz pulled him down the hard road a piece until it started.  George Wagner’s were up at Floraville last night.  Jake Mehrmans had a dance, it also was Bernice Mehrmans birthday.  Dan Geodell furnished mass.


Saturday, June 7, 1930

Papa & Rosalia went up to Henry the morning to fix [the] fence.    There are dances all over tonight.  We have an invitation to Ronnenbergs and also have one to Ettlings, Marcella’s birthday.  There is one at Chas. Sensel’s barn dance, one at Oak Grove, Renault.  It rained a little this evening.  Papa, Rosalia & Bertille were at Ettlings this evening.  There sure were a lot of people there.  Marcella got all kinds of beautiful presents.  Those that were there were, Peter Reheis & family, John Reheis & family, Albert Cleveland & family, Robert Laut & family, Perry Klotz & family & Elmer Kammlers wife & Billy, August Blackburn & family, Nick Menths family, Ike Napier & family, George Boll & family.  The boys were: Henry Spalt, Clifford Stallebher, Elmer & Clement Parker, Odillo Eichenseer, Henry & Ralph Wiegand, Levi Ganley, Clarence Pabst, Karl Kammler & his girl, & Alfred Kammler & his girl, Ralph Rausch, Kenneth Kemp, Milton Wagner, & a good many others from St. Louis.  Cake, Beer, Lemonade were served.  We came home at 12:30.  Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary were at Ronnenbergs.  There was an awful big crowd there too.  Henry said it was crowded at Sensel’s too.  There were way many more people at Ettling then what I have mentioned.


Sunday, May 4, 1930

Papa & Bertille went to first mass this morning.  It rained a little, it is supposed to rain seven Sundays because it rained on Easter Sunday.  Today is Olivia Laut’s birthday.  Papa, Rosalia, Bertille, Uncle Fred, Aunt Mary went to the play and dance at Kammler’s hall.  The name of the play is “What Happened to Braggs.”  It was 3 acts.  That that were in the play are: Milton Wagner, Ralph Rausch, Henry Wieg and Ralph Wiegand, Henry Spalt, Karl Ball, Alvera Jatho, Marcella Ettling, Eunice Blackburn, Flossie Kammler.  They had the play in the afternoon too.


Sunday, February 2, 1930

Today the groundhog saw his shadow that means six more weeks bad weather.  Aunt Mary & Uncle Fred were here this morning.  Henry came up with Levi Ganley to church and took our Whippet home.  After dinner Henry’s family came up because there was Benediction and throat blessing.  We all got our throats blessed.  We found 5 eggs.  John Kammler’s and Mehremans were also there.  Mrs. Laut is on the sick list at present.  Adam Eckert’s baby Irvin is also sick with bronchitis and pneumonia.  Tonight there is a play at Smithton.  Players from the St. Mary’s Parish at Belleville (to preform).  Today Bill Grohman had their little baby girl baptized.  Mr. and Mrs. Adam Matzenbacher were sponsons.  They named it Orlin Ida.  Henry had company last night.  Uncle Pete and Jake’s kid and Betty Jane and rest of family were there.


Sunday, January 12, 1930

Papa, Rosalia, Bertille went to church.  Henry & Robert Laut were fixing telephone line.  Henry came here for dinner.  Rosalia & Bertille were at Mrs. Joe Wachtel this afternoon.  Angela was there too.  Papa went uptown in the afternoon.
