Monday, Dec. 22, 1930

We all went out to Henry’s butchering today.  When we came home we started washing.  We brought our old talking machine along up & played a few pieces on it.  Henry butchered 2 hogs.  Emil also helped.  Leona & Bertille scrubbed the kitchen floor yet, after we were through butchering, we were done about 11:30.  We got a little Christmas tree and took it along home.


Sunday, Dec. 21, 1930

Henry & family were all here for dinner, today after dinner Henry went up to see the priest.  We went out to Uncle Fred’s and Aunt Mary’s this evening & listened to the Radio & had lunch there too.  They was up at our house this morning.  Mrs. Seibert is getting buried this morning at Smithton.  Henry took the barrel & kettle along home, he is going to butcher tomorrow.


Friday, Dec. 19, 1930

Mr. Caldwell from Burksville was here this morning for a short while.  This afternoon we all went out to Henry’s to saw wood.  Robert Laut, John Henkel, Emil were all helping.  Mr. & Mrs. Walter Kelley are rejoicing over a new born baby girl last week.  Leo McCarthy captured a fox last week & Greg McCarthy had a spelling contest in school last Sat.  Robert Heyl was winner, he won 99 words out of 100, he missed the word alien.  Mrs. Seibert of Smithton died and will be buried Sun. afternoon at Smithton.  We put our Christmas bells on the window this evening.  Hy. Armstutz store clerk at Gambach’s retired & is going out butchering now for the people & Ralph Rausch has filled the vacancy.


Thursday, Dec. 18, 1930

Looks like snow this morning.  It started snowing & kept up all day.  Henry & Leona went to Belleville this morning & left the kids here.  They were back again for dinner.  We baked delicious cookies this morning.  Harold & Virgil Eichenseer were here this evening and brought us a letter for an invitation for a play in St. Augustine’s Hall next Tues. afternoon given by the school children, admission fee says 11¢ in this letter.  We got a Christmas card today from Creses Freund.


Tuesday, Dec. 16, 1930

Papa went butchering out at Uncle Adam’s today, he was there for lunch & dinner.  He had to go to George Henkel’s this morning first and get the hogs for them.  We washed, ironed, baked cookies, fry in meat today.  Elmer Kammler, John Braun, Willie Braun, Gus. Klotz are all butchering today.  It is a right nice day, only it is a little cold.  This morning they had to shoot so many times before they killed the hogs at Henkels, Emil, John, George & Papa they all shot a couple of times & finally George killed them with the last bullet, they had.  Good Luck wasn’t it, I Say!  Levi Gregson’s, Papa & Henry help them to butcher.


Monday, Dec. 15, 1930

Today we are butchering one hog again.  Uncle Fred, Aunt Mary, Henry & family were all here for lunch & dinner.  Aunt Mary mixed some Caramel Cookie Recipe together.  Rosalia went up town this evening and got some air & gas in the Whippet.  Our Belleville News Democrat won’t come the same day it is printed anymore, because it don’t pay the bus driver to bring it along, because not many people here get that paper.


Sunday, Dec. 14, 1930

Henry & family were all here for dinner today.  This evening Bill Freund was here for supper.  We played 6 games pinochle, Papa & I were partners & Rosalia & Bill.  We won 5 games out of 6.  Not so bad eh!  Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary were here a little while this morning before church.


Tuesday, Dec. 9, 1930

We are butchering one hog today.  Uncle Fred, Aunt Mary, Henry & family were all here for lunch & dinner.  Steve Rennecker was over this morning also a little while.  This afternoon Aunt Mary & Bertille went to Mrs. Rausch funeral.  There were so many people there so we just went as far as the house, because the church would of been crowded anyway.  It was an awful large funeral.  Miss Elsie Rausch is going to go down by Mrs. Brauns now the way we heard.  We were going out to Uncle Fred’s, Aunt Mary’s & met then coming to our place, right by the cemetery, so we turned around & came back home again, we were going out to listen to their radio, but there receiver didn’t work, so they brought it up this evening, so we could take it along to Belleville tomorrow.  They want to get one now from Philip Braun’s, so when they got there Mrs. Braun wasn’t at home, she went along over to St. Louis with Victor & the rest didn’t know were it was at, so Aunt Mary & Uncle Fred came down again.  I seen in the paper that Miss Emma Baetje from Smithton died.


Monday, Dec. 8, 1930

Today is Church Holiday.  We all went to first mass this morning & then came home & ate breakfast & dinner.  Uncle Fred, Aunt Mary & Emil were all here, after that Oscar Birkner’s family came to get the wash stand.  Emil was here to see about butchering.  Henry & family went to Waterloo today.  We all went in to Belleville, Aunt Mary took some eggs along in & sold 3 doz. for .35¢.  We bought some toys for the kids Christmas presents.  The Hecker people were all mostly presented in there.  Ike Napiers moved today from the Knapp place to Ed. Meng’s again, Sensel & Pannebecker Blackburn moved him back, he was only up there about 3 months.  Adam Eckert’s birthday is today.


Sunday, Dec. 7, 1930

This morning they rang & then they tolled the bell for Mrs. Rausch died this morning early.  The funeral will be Tues. afternoon at one o’clock.  Today is also Grandpa’s [Brand] birthday.  He would of been 92 years old.  Mrs. Rausch was about 82 years at the time of her death.  Uncle Fred, Aunt Mary, Henry & family were all here today for dinner.  This afternoon we had a pinochle game.  Uncle Fred & Papa were partners & Aunt Mary & Rosalia they won 2 games out of 3.
