Friday, Dec. 19, 1930

Mr. Caldwell from Burksville was here this morning for a short while.  This afternoon we all went out to Henry’s to saw wood.  Robert Laut, John Henkel, Emil were all helping.  Mr. & Mrs. Walter Kelley are rejoicing over a new born baby girl last week.  Leo McCarthy captured a fox last week & Greg McCarthy had a spelling contest in school last Sat.  Robert Heyl was winner, he won 99 words out of 100, he missed the word alien.  Mrs. Seibert of Smithton died and will be buried Sun. afternoon at Smithton.  We put our Christmas bells on the window this evening.  Hy. Armstutz store clerk at Gambach’s retired & is going out butchering now for the people & Ralph Rausch has filled the vacancy.


Thursday, Dec. 4, 1930

Mr. Caldwell from Burksville was here this morning.  This afternoon Papa & Rosalia went up in the woods.  It rained a little this morning.  This evening Mamie &  Angela Eichenseer came down & took Rosalia & Bertille along to the Literary Meeting.  The main feature of the evening was music, played by Mr. H.M. Hill with violin, & Greg McCarthy piano, & he also sang a few songs.  Spring-Time in the Rockies & America was sung by the audience.


Saturday, Nov. 22, 1930

Papa went to Waterloo this afternoon to get his watch fixed.  Henry & Leona went to Belleville this afternoon & got the kids new shoes.  The kids stayed here.  The Democrat candidates gave a free dance & lunch in the Odd Fellow’s Hall tonight, Henry & Leona went there, it was so crowded in the basement & also on the second floor.  Hugo Radan furnished the latest music & Crooks Ramblers the old time music.  We were out at George Boll’s celebrating Karl’s 20 birthday.  Cake, Lemonade, Beer, wine, sandwiches were the refreshments served.  Papa bought 2 little pigs this afternoon from a man by Burksville.  He also brought a little kitten along too.


Saturday, August 9, 1930

Today is sales all over again.  Mrs. Hirst, Fred Schaefer and many others.  Papa is spreading lime this morning.  This afternoon we all went to Mrs. Hirst sale.  Papa bought a harrow for $1.50.  Roy Staunbiel bought a bed and we had to haul it up to Jennie Coop’s for them.  This evening we took the spring wagon out to Roy’s and from there we went to Uncle Fred’s and took them along & then we went to Hy. Ronedebergs dance.  Beer, cake, fruit salad were the refreshments.  There is also a dance at Bill Probst’s tonight too.  John Reheis have one by Burksville too.


Saturday, August 2, 1930

Today is sales all over again, Smithton, Red Bud, Waterloo, Burksville.  Papa was talking like going to Geoddelman down by Red Bud.  Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary were here a little while this afternoon.  Papa didn’t buy anything at the sale today.  This evening we all went out to Cleveland’s dance, we sure did have a good time, there were so many people there.  Dan Geodelle & Gus Geodelle, Bill Herzog furnished music.  Lemonade, cake, beer were served.


Saturday, July 26, 1930

Today is sales all over again.  We all went to the church sale.  Papa bought some lumber.  Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary got the range for $65.00.  Henry went to Peter Mulhauser sale at Burksville, they say everything went cheap.  Tonight is a dance at Kammler’s Hall.  We went up to Eichenseer’s corner to listen to the music.  Uncle Fred & Papa hauled a load of kindling out to their place this evening.  They were both here for supper.  They sure were loud at Kammler’s tonight, they were just yelling.


Friday, July 25, 1930

Today is Peter Melhauser’s sale by Burksville, Ill.  Papa thought he was going.  Today is also Clarence Pabsts birthday.  The way they say there is a bunch going to surprise him tonight.  Uncle Fred helped at the school today and Aunt Mary was here all day.  Uncle Fred came down here for dinner then afterwards Papa went along up & worked at the school too all afternoon.  We went out to Henry’s this morning.  Rosalia & Bertille got a hair cut.  We took some plums along too for jelly.  This evening Wm. C. Heyl came & wanted his money for lime dust.  Papa paid him $117.65 by check.  Mamie & Clarence Eichenseer was down a little while this evening.  Mamie said there was a big bunch went down to Clarence Pabst birthday.  He is 22 years old today.


Saturday, May 24, 1930

Today is Henry’s birthday.  He is to be 26 years old.  It is also their second Wedding Anniversary.  Papa went to Waterloo this morning and this afternoon to the sale at Burksville and one at Ruma.  Tonight there is a dance at Adam Braun’s barn, Broad Hollow Grange.  There are quite a few.  Papa, Rosalia, Bertille, Uncle Fred, Aunt Mary were all at Henry’s this evening.  The only ones that were there.  We had cake and beer.  Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary went to the show.  They said it was pretty good.
